A little girl on a BIG journey

Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of  a 10 year old Syrian refugee child at the heart of The Walk.  She has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees.

Since July 2021, Amal has travelled to 166 towns and cities in 17 countries and been welcomed by two million people on the street and by tens of millions online.   475 events unique to each community that she visits have been created for her by thousands of artists and civil society and faith leaders. Her journeys are festivals of art and hope that draw attention to the huge numbers of children fleeing war, violence and persecution, each with their own story. Her urgent message to the world is “Don’t forget about us”.

In January 2025, Little Amal continues her journey across the world with an incredible 2,600 mile journey across Chile with the Fundación Internacional Teatro a Mil.  The festival’s 2025 theme focuses on humanity and once again, Amal will make new friends and share her message of hope with the people across this beautiful country.

Who is Little Amal?

Little Amal has become an international symbol of compassion and of human rights. She carries a message of hope for displaced people everywhere, especially children who have been separated from their families.

The puppet of Little Amal was designed and built by Handspring Puppet Company, who created the puppets for the international hit play War Horse, establishing them as one of the most important puppet companies in the world.

Everywhere Amal goes she is greeted with events that are authentic and meaningful to the local people she meets.

The Amal Fund

Half of all refugees are children. Half of all school age refugee children have lost their opportunity of a formal education. Today tens of thousands who have fled war and persecution are urgently in need of support.

To help these children, we’ve launched The Amal Fund with Choose Love.  Since Amal has started walking, she has raised $1,000,000 to provide urgently-needed support for refugee and displaced children all over the world.

Donate today HERE to help us provide education, food, shelter, emergency medical care, legal assistance and much more for children like Little Amal.

HOPE. Too BIG to ignore.

Throughout history the movement of people has fuelled human progress, enriched culture and accelerated the acquisition of knowledge. Amal’s journey is a celebration of migration and cultural diversity that tells the story of the contributions made by refugees and immigrants. It represents the refugee story as one of potential, success, respect, hospitality and kindness.

“It is more important than ever to reignite the conversation about the refugee crisis and to change the narrative around it. Yes, refugees need food and blankets, but they also need dignity and a voice. The purpose of The Walk is to highlight the potential of the refugee, not just their dire circumstances. Little Amal is 3.5 metres tall because we want the world to grow big enough to greet her. We want her to inspire us to think big and to act bigger.”– Amir Nizar Zuabi, Artistic Director of The Walk
