From September 14 – October 2 Little Amal explored all five boroughs of New York City in partnership with St. Ann’s Warehouse.

50 events were created for her with artists, civic leaders, community groups, and young New Yorkers of all backgrounds. Explore many of Amal’s NYC events below, and learn more about the hundreds of partners and artists who created her welcomes.

The moment I land

JFK Airport Terminal 4: Arrivals Hall

Queens

At JFK Airport Terminal 4, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Children’s Chorus staged a spectacular welcome for Amal.

A musical welcome conducted by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, directed by Bartlett Sher, with music by Philip Glass specially arranged by Nico Muhly. With PS146Q The Howard Beach School.

Lost in Jamaica, Queens

Queens

Amal wandered the streets of Jamaica Queens carrying her big suitcase. She has no idea where she is.

Young people from the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning were Amal’s guides as she explores the neighborhood helping to celebrate the Center’s 50th Anniversary.

Night time. Lost in Astoria Queens, Amal was close to despair. A dazzling path of light showed her the way to a place where she could sleep in safety.

Grand Central Terminal

Amal arrived into the main hall of Grand Central Terminal and discovered just how vast and bustling this city is.

She was bewildered but the music of Resistance Revival Chorus gave her the strength to venture out and face the big city.

New York Public Library

On the steps of The New York Public Library Amal discovered the power and beauty of words in a magical celebration of the treasures that lie hidden in books.

Amal walks to Times Square. She is struck by the bright lights. Tired and afraid she wants nothing more than to find a place to sleep. She vanishes into the night.

When afraid hum a song

Manhattan

In Times Square Amal was astonished by the lights, the sounds, the imagery, the crowds of people from every part of the planet. She was overwhelmed.

New friends from the Broadway community comforted and reassured her with a musical performance of Broadway favorites that remind us that Times Square is for everyone. Lincoln Center

Amal was drawn to the joyous sounds of Lincoln Center where audience members of all ages welcomed her to a theatrical performance celebrating everything the Lincoln Center has to offer.  Directed by Tea Alagić.

As she walked from Lincoln Center to American Museum of Natural History, Amal was joined in with a raucous exuberant second line processional with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Together they discovered the rhythms of the city.

Amal was treated to a once-in-a-lifetime tour of the American Museum of Natural History and all its wonders.

Amal… Park… Cake!

Central Park

Amal was very hungry… she could smell a yummy cake that’s hidden somewhere in Central Park and needed help to find it!

All the children of New York City were invited to join Amal in a massive scavenger hunt through the park to find Amal’s cake.

Washington Heights

Strolling in Washington Heights, Amal found herself among the Bachata, Merengue and Salsa dancers of The People’s Festival. She couldn’t help but join in the street dancing and discovered that all you need do is to let the rhythm lead your feet.

Exploring Downtown Brooklyn, out of nowhere Amal heard familiar sounds, sounds of home.

Syrian-American hip-hop artist and peace activist Omar Offendum sings to Amal songs of hope and hardship in a concert presented by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in association with Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Two Trees, with students from the Mark Morris Dance Group.

Late in the evening, Amal was drawn to a carousel lit up in the middle of Brooklyn Bridge Park. She found two special sisters and was invited to play…

In Corona Park Amal mistakes a birthday piñata for a donkey about to get a beating…

She rushed to its rescue and made an unexpected friend. Together they explored the pleasures of galloping through a park.

It’s late at night in Jackson Heights and Amal was feeling fearful. Her beating heart was echoed by a performance by a group of drummers. As the moments pass she found the courage to keep walking.

Brooklyn Children’s Museum

On the rooftop of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Amal joins children of all ages and backgrounds to weave a huge web of yarn.

As part of a workshop led by Natalia Nakazawa, children shared stories about where they come from and their dreams of where they hope to go, while adding to the collective weaving.

Arriving in Bed Stuy, Amal was led through streets filled with the music of drummers. She was guided to Restoration Plaza where the neighborhood welcomed her with party she will never forget.

A quiet refuge

Green-Wood Cemetery

Amal needed a break from the noise of the city and explored the beautiful Green-Wood Cemetery. As she walked she found herself surrounded by local children and musicians who have come to sing to her.

In Bay Ridge Amal almost felt as if she’ was back home in Aleppo.  Caught up in a Syrian wedding procession, she discovered she still remembered the words of all the songs…

Time to fly

Walking through Williamsburg Amal wassearching for a place to sleep when she found herself in the STREB Lab for Action Mechanics.

She discovered that there is nothing stronger than will power, not even gravity.

When the pigeons flock

St Anns Warehouse

Amal was in a mischievous mood as she chased pigeons through Brooklyn Bridge Park.

She came across a gathering of children and families all decorating pigeon puppets and postcards.  Musicians started to gather and before she knew it, she was surrounded by a flock of pigeons. Together they led her across the Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan.

A participatory family event led by St. Ann’s WarehouseRobin Frohardt and Fogo Azul in collaboration with Students Rebuild, a program of the Bezos Family Foundation.

Amal wanted to cross the astonishing High Bridge joining The Bronx to Washington Heights, but discovered that she is afraid of heights.

The local community came to her aid and helped her find the courage to walk all the way to the other side.

She was welcomed by the drumming students of the Harlem School of the Arts and The Kotchegna Dance Company who together introduced her to the unforgettable pulse of this vibrant community.

In Bryant Park Amal was welcomed to a special performance of The Creation by James Weldon Johnson, celebrating an art movement by which NYC is known all over the world: the Harlem Renaissance.

Embrace the tangle

Tenement Museum, Chinatown

Manhattan

As she made her way through The Lower East Side into Chinatown Amal became entangled in lines of laundry that were hanging from the buildings.

She discovered two parallel NYC traditions that have flourished in the Lower East Side as words in Yiddish and in Mandarin floated through the air above the narrow streets.

Amal was invited to party in the Clemente Soto Vélez Center.  To her surprise she met puppet friends created by Teatro SEA.

Amal found that she isn’t the only little girl lost in the big city. With her new friend she walked through the street of the East Village looking for shelter.  On their journey they tried to answer the biggest of all questions: how to make the world a better place?

Amal found herself surrounded by a huge cloud of butterflies that lead her through Snug Harbor where she was welcomed with a collaborative parade including the Staten Island Community and performers from the Porch Plays Project and La Isla Bonita Festival.

Amal, strolling down the lower end of Broadway, was suddenly confronted by a charging bull.  She was charged by a whole herd of raging bulls, and found the courage to face them.

Winter Garden Brookfield Place

As her time in New York City nears its end, Amal was invited to a moving ceremony of music and stories, honoring immigrants and refugees who have made New York City their home and made a powerful impact within their community, and young people from across the five boroughs who have recently arrived in New York City.

A celebration of immigration and refugee stories past and present, in partnership with Notch Theatre Company with performances by world renowned Jazz musician Kinan Azmeh and his band, with Pinchintu Multi National Girls Choir and Processional Arts.

After the performance Amal walked to the waterfront where she boarded a ship to travel across the New York Harbor.

One last chance to say goodbye…

Amal encountered once again the friends she has met, the puppets she has befriended, the musicians she has danced with and the artists with whom she has performed.

As the sun sets on Amal’s last evening in NYC, everyone was invited to accompany her towards the boat and to bid her farewell as she sailed away…
