Amal’s journey through Italy began in the old port town of Bari, before travelling north on her way towards France.

Amal’s journey through Italy was produced by The Walk Productions and Good Chance Theatre in association with Handspring Puppet Company, Ludovica Tinghi and Roberto Roberto, with logistics production by Mestiere Cinema.

Amal Lands in Italy

Bari, Italy

Torre a Mare

Amal arrived into Italy in the small port of Torre a Mare.

She was welcomed by local communities including a giant puppet of an Italian Nonna, who then guided Amal through her first experiences of Italy.

Discovering Bari

Corso Vittorio Emanuele – Palazzo di città

Amal walked through the city centre on her first Italian day, surrounded by the sights sounds and aromas of Italy.

She soon finds herself in the middle of a huge dance celebration performed by the young and old community of Bari.

Hands That Smell Like Dough

Amal’s newest friend, Wise Nonna shares advice about life, the way north, the obstacles Amal might face.

At the end of the dance celebration for Amal, Nonna sings her to sleep with an Italian lullaby.

Nature Walk

Scampitella, Italy

Amal walked in nature, surrounded by the wind turbines of huge windmills towering above her.

She felt small in the vast landscape that surrounded her, but was quickly welcomed by the community with colourful kites in the shape of birds.

Disarming Hope

Naples, Italy

Teatro Trianon Viviani, Quartiere Forcella e Decumano inferiore

Amal explored Forcella, a historic district in the ancient center of Naples.

The Trianon Viviani Theater welcomed her with an event of poetic resistance that defends the joy and futures of all children.

At La Casa di Vetro, the Piccola Orchestra di Forcella performed a short repertoire for Amal and a group of dancers accompanied her along Spaccanapoli, the ancient decumanus of Greek-Roman Naples.

Amal, the Travellers and the Incredible Forest

Real Bosco di Capodimonte

Amal, an orchestra and sixty little travellers explored forest full of adventures.

Their extraordinary journey was full of surprising encounters with sea monsters, magical birds, wizards and giant butterflies…

Into the Belly of Naples

Naples, Italy

Quartiere La Sanità

Accompanied by a parade from the Potlach Theater, Amal reached the Piazza della Sanità, where she was welcomed by three women from the Sanità Theater who recited poems by Faraj Bayrakdarche translated into Neapolitan.

Amal received the greetings of the children of the Rione Sanità Educational Network and was given a large skirt sewn by Nakupenda Sartoria Sociale, while the Pegaso association read letters written for her.

Amal’s Tantrum

Amal was welcomed by a group of tammorre coordinated by Valentina Ferraiuolo with singing by Marcello Colasurdo.

Amal’s reaction was volcanic and spontaneous: she lost her patience, she had finally had enough.

Little Amal was welcomed by His Holiness Pope Francis, Cardinal Michael Czerny, under-secretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section of The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and by Monsignor Benoni Ambarus, bishop auxiliary delegate for Charity, for Migrants and for the pastoral care of Roma and Sinti.
Amal was welcomed in St. Peter’s Square, inside the Bernini colonnade near Angels Unawares, a monument depicting a group of migrants.
We are grateful for the partnership of the Diocese of Rome and the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for service of the Integral Human Development of the Holy See.

Hide and Seek

Genazzano, Italy

Amal stopped in the beautiful small town of Genazzano where she was greeted by local children who invited her to play hide and seek. 

Together they played in the narrow streets of the village before breaking bread in the nearby castle, giving Amal the meal she needed for the next part of her epic odyssey.

Amal at the MAXXI

MAXXI Museum

To celebrate Amal’s arrival to Rome, MAXXI Museum created a momentous educational and participatory workshop for children and their families.

Each participant was invited to create flowers to give to the child upon arrival, leaving a personal message in each of them according to one of the topics addressed: Home, Identity, Welcome, Migration.

Amal’s Night Visions

Amal’s lost homeland is alive in her thoughts. Memories of war rise to the surface and when she wakes visions of home appear. If she follows them where will they lead? 

Tammam Azzam, one of Syria’s most distinguished visual artists, now living in Germany, paints scenes of his war-torn homeland. In Rome Tammam’s visceral and poignant paintings of Syrian buildings destroyed by war were projected onto the buildings of Teatro India, creating a powerful installation in collaboration with Finn Ross from FRAY Studio.

Associations, humanitarian agencies, NGOs, artists and educators came together to create a joyful Sunday for all young people, especially Little Amal and the many refugee children around the world she represents.

The City Through My Eyes

Rome, Italy

Piazza Navona to Piazza Trilussa

Amal soaked up the atmosphere of the ancient city of Rome while she walked past the iconic landmarks and sights.

Syrian artist Omar Abu Saada presented his specially created audio installation allowing Amal to see the city through the eyes of a refugee.

On her way, Amal passed by the Argentina Theater and a romantic serenata was sung to her from the balcony.

Birds and a Choir

Spoleto, Italy

As she travelled from Rome to Assisi, Amal found herself on a quiet dirt road, surrounded by trees and tranquility, in front of a beautiful old building.

LaMama Umbria welcomed Amal to Assisi with flocks of birds, songs and dances from distant lands and a picnic at the edge of the woods. Amal was renewed and strengthened by the knowledge that she will always retain a piece of her past as she moves into the future.

St Francis and the Birds

Porta Nuova to Basilica Superiore

Arriving in the hilly town of Assisi, Amal was welcomed by a troupe of bird stilt walkers who accompany her to discover the city of Saint Assisi who loved birds.

Amal was very pleased to finally meet friends she can see eye to eye. Welcomed at the Basilica of St Francis as the sun was setting, she was lulled to sleep by the singing of the Musical Chapel of the Papal Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi.

A Book for Amal

Montagnola Park

Amal discovered the beauty of theatre in all the its forms and languages at Montagnola Park where she learned about the importance of young people having access to culture and art.

Amal hurts her knee whilst playing football with the Bologna Football Team.

Emergency International, who have provided aid to over 12 patients across 19 countries, looked after Amal and made sure she had the medical care she needed to continue her long journey.

Little Amal’s arrival in Milan was marked by fireworks! 

Although they are intended for celebrations,  fire, noise, smoke and the ever-faster series of explosions leading up to the powerful final bang have a totally different meaning for a child fleeing a war…

The Puzzle of Human Rights

Casa Emergency

In Milan, Amal’s journey continued in the garden of Casa EMERGENCY, an open cultural space and the home of an organisation that offers free, high-quality medical care around the world, with no discrimination.

Through playing together, the children of Casa Emergency welcomed her, and communicated without barriers. Piece by piece, they put together the Puzzle of Human Rights created by EMERGENCY, and by playing, they learned something important: human rights are a universal good.

After playtime, the City Council and EMERGENCY’s representatives officially welcomed Amal on behalf of the whole city of Milan.

Thunderstorm and Light

Turin, Italy

Carignano Square

After a massive thunderstorm cancels Amal’s original plans, the clouds suddenly part and the skies clear.

Amal explores the streets of Turin, flooded with puddles for her to splash through. She meets families – some who arrived to Italy from Syria as refugees – who had waited for weeks for their moment with Amal.

Amal in Villa Ormond

Sanremo, Italy

Giardini di Villa Ormond

On Amal’s last day in Italy with music, flowers and fine arts, Amal was welcomed in Sanremo in the wonderful historic park of Villa Ormond, home of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law.

The Municipality of Sanremo, the Villa Ormond Foundation and the Sanremo Academy of Fine Arts created a path of artistic installations and musical events for Amal to explore.
