Europe

Chios

Chios Harbour

Little Amal arrives in Chios by boat. As she approaches the shore, she hears voices singing to her. The music welcomes her from across the sea.

The local communities of Chios welcomed Amal with “Painemata” – traditional songs written especially for Amal – wishing her well as she took her first steps in Europe.

The arrival of Little Amal was a celebration that connected tradition to the modern day. The “Painemata” was heard in new musical versions set to brand new lyrics, provided by island residents from all generation, who creatively retold the story and journey of Little Amal. These unique songs were created as part of a workshop by the Chios Music Festival in collaboration with the Chios Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chios Music School, the Brasilionico percussion ensemble, and the young refugees who participated in the Chios Music Festival’s annual educational programme, as well as important local organizations and institutions.
This event was the shared vision of director Yolanda Markopoulou, composer Lefteris Veniadis and violinist Olga Holdorff-Myriagou. We are grateful to Onassis STEGI for providing part of the set design.

Sounds in Castle

Ioannina

Silversmithing Museum

In the city centre, Amal met children and young people from the Youth Center of Epirus, joining them on a treasure hunt designed by the artist and educator Alexandra Zoi. The children led Amal into the Castle where she discovered a special performance of Marigo and Yannos – an infinite passage – created just for her.

The work is inspired by the traditional, polyphonic song “O Yannos Kai I Marigo” from the Epirus region. The tale discusses the metaphysical connection between love and death. Natural instruments are joined by the echoes of stone and air, in the service of brand new pieces, grafted with modern dance into a single dramaturgical composition. The composition and editing of the work is signed by Alexandros Rizopoulos, with the participation of video artist Kostis Emmanouilidis, the polyphonic ensemble Anassa and the Alenti ensemble.
