A Host of People

A Host of People is a multi-racial and queer-centered Detroit-based ensemble theater company creating original work that celebrates imagination, complexity, and the synthesis of seemingly disparate elements—at once epic and intimate, political and personal, poetic and approachable. AHOP exists to create aesthetically rigorous, intellectually challenging theater that is warm, welcoming, and inspiring to people from all walks of life while being fundamentally rooted in justice. We choose our subject matter and themes carefully with an eye to stories, topics, and aesthetic approaches that will be equally thrilling to the most adventurous theater fans as well as those with less exposure to the form. This is how A Host of People moves people—we play with the light and the dark; the head and the heart.

Islamic Center of Detroit

The Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) exists to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. ICD opened to the public in January 2000. Since then, we have been expanding by working on new projects that benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims in the Detroit metro area and surrounding communities. Some of these efforts include: a full time school; Saturday school; Sunday school; after-school programming; a Quran program; youth empowerment tools and training; female empowerment workshops; MUHSEN Certified programming; community services (such as neighborhood clean ups, clothing drives, a weekly food pantry); Refugee’s services; mental health programming for youth, adults, and seniors; health fairs, Ramadan activities; Imam services; and recreational activities such as a girls’ and boys’ basketball, volleyball, soccer, and summer camps.

SOFA Stories

Sofa Stories Detroit uses live theatre and digital media to amplify the stories of young people impacted by housing insecurity or homelessness who may have resorted to couch-surfing as a means to survive. Featuring monologues created in collaboration with those who have experienced homelessness, the project aims to bring attention to an often invisible crisis and imagine a world without youth homelessness. Sofa Stories is an ongoing project of Every Soul Arts, a collective of artists, care providers, activists, and people with lived experience of homelessness who believe every person deserves access to safe and affordable housing and opportunities to explore and celebrate their own creativity.
