In Times Square Amal was astonished by the lights, the sounds, the imagery, the crowds of people from every part of the planet. She was overwhelmed.

New friends from the Broadway community comforted and reassured her with a musical performance of Broadway favorites that remind us that Times Square is for everyone. Featuring performance from over 200 NYC Schools students and Broadway performers Lindsay Roberts, Tamar Greene, Marissa Rosen, Holly Butler, Michael Maliakel and Sonya Balsara.

Syrian-American hip-hop artist and peace activist Omar Offendum sings to Amal songs of hope and hardship in a concert presented by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in association with Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Two Trees, with students from the Mark Morris Dance Group.

On the rooftop of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Amal joins children of all ages and backgrounds to weave a huge web of yarn.

Amal was in a mischievous mood as she chased pigeons through Brooklyn Bridge Park.

She came across a gathering of children and families all decorating pigeon puppets and postcards.  Musicians started to gather and before she knew it, she was surrounded by a flock of pigeons. Together they led her across the Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan.

A participatory family event led by St. Ann’s Warehouse, Robin Frohardt and Fogo Azul in collaboration with Students Rebuild, a program of the Bezos Family Foundation.

As she made her way through The Lower East Side into Chinatown Amal became entangled in lines of laundry that were hanging from the buildings.

She discovered two parallel NYC traditions that have flourished in the Lower East Side as words in Yiddish and in Mandarin floated through the air above the narrow streets.

As her time in New York City nears its end, Amal was invited to a moving ceremony of music and stories, honoring immigrants and refugees who have made New York City their home and made a powerful impact within their community, and young people from across the five boroughs who have recently arrived in New York City.

A celebration of immigration and refugee stories past and present, in partnership with Notch Theatre Company with performances by world renowned Jazz musician Kinan Azmeh and his band, with Pinchintu Multi National Girls Choir and Processional Arts.

After the performance Amal walked to the waterfront where she boarded a ship to travel across the New York Harbor.

Amal encountered once again the friends she has met, the puppets she has befriended, the musicians she has danced with and the artists with whom she has performed.
